How To Use the Watch App

The Watch app gives you your Skills and your yardages on your wrist, so your phone can stay in the bag.

Setting it up

The Watch app installs alongside the iPhone app. If it does not appear:

  1. Open the Watch app on your iPhone
  2. Scroll down to Available Apps or find PreSwing in the list
  3. Turn on Show app on Apple Watch

There is no separate sign-in. Your account, your Skills, and your subscription all come across from your iPhone.

The first sync

The first time you open PreSwing on your Watch, it syncs with your phone. Keep the iPhone app open and your phone nearby while it works.

You will see Ready to Sync, then Syncing with iPhonee, then Sync Completee.

If it says Sync Failed, the iPhone app is probably not open. Open it, then tap Retry Now on your Watch.

You only wait like this once. After that, syncing happens in the background.

What is on the Watch

Two things: Skills and Play.

Using Skills on your Watch

  1. Tap Skills
  2. Tap the speaker icon on any row to hear your top five tips for that Skill
  3. Tap the row itself to open it

Inside a Skill you get three options:

  • Tips to read your written tips for that Skill
  • Notes to read your notes
  • Audios to listen to longer recordings

Tap any recording under Audios and you get a player with a progress slider, elapsed time, and buttons to jump five seconds forward or back.

Recording an audio note on your Watch

You can capture a thought without taking your phone out.

  1. Tap Skills
  2. Tap the Skill it belongs to
  3. Tap Audios
  4. Tap the + button
  5. Tap the record button, and tap it again to stop
  6. Type a title and save

It saves to that Skill's Audios tab and appears on your iPhone.

Recordings stop automatically at three minutes.

This is the only thing you can create from the Watch. Tips, My Voice cues, and your coach's recordings are all made on the phone.

Using Play on your Watch

Play on the Watch is optional. If you would rather play from your phone, nothing here is required.

  1. Start your round on your iPhone*
  2. Open PreSwing on your Watch
  3. Tap Play

You get par, handicap, and three distances, with the middle of the green as the large number.

From there:

  • Tap the arrows at the bottom to change holes
  • Tap the hole number to see the full hole list and jump to any hole
  • Tap the golfer icon in the top corner to open your Skills and play audio

Your Watch has its own GPS, so once Play is open your distances come from your wrist rather than from your phone.

Rounds have to be started on the iPhone. Scoring, notes, and shot tracking are on the phone too.

Auto-advance

When you leave a green and reach the next tee, your Watch taps you and asks whether to move to the next hole.

  • Tap Move Now to go straight away
  • Tap Cancel to stay put
  • Do nothing and it advances after five seconds

This is on by default. To turn it off:

  1. On your iPhone tap the ... button on the home screen
  2. Tap Settings
  3. Under Play, turn off Auto-advance to next hole on Apple Watch

Keeping the Watch in sync

Changes you make on your iPhone reach the Watch on their own, as long as both are nearby and the iPhone app has been opened recently.

There is no sync button. If the Watch is showing something out of date:

  1. Press the side button on your Watch to show recent apps
  2. Swipe left on PreSwing and tap the X to close it
  3. Open the iPhone app
  4. Open PreSwing on your Watch again

Audio files take longer to transfer than Skill names do, so if a Skill appears on your Watch but tapping the speaker does nothing, keep the Watch near your phone with the iPhone app open for a few minutes.

Away from your iPhone

Once the Watch has synced, these work without your phone nearby:

  • Your Skills, tips, and notes
  • Any audio that has already transferred
  • Distances and hole navigation during a round, using the Watches own GPS

These need the phone:

  • Starting a round
  • The first sync
  • Downloading anything new
  • Recording My Voice and My Coach cues

What is free

Skills on the Watch follow the same rules as the phone. The three free Skills are open, the other 27 need a subscription.

Play on the Watch is a subscription feature.

Questions

The Watch app will not sync.
Open the iPhone app and leave it open on screen, then tap Retry Now on the Watch. If it still fails, close the Watch app completely and reopen it with the iPhone app open. The two have to be near each other, and the phone app has to be running rather than just installed.

A Skill shows on my Watch but the speaker does nothing.
The Skill names transfer quickly and the audio files take longer. Keep the Watch near your phone with the iPhone app open for a few minutes and try again. If it still will not play, run Force Sync in Settings on the iPhone, then reopen the Watch app.

Play says "No active round".
Rounds start on the iPhone. Tap PLAY on your phone, set up the round, tap Start Round, then open Play on your Watch.

Can I keep score on my Watch?
Not currently. Scoring, hole notes, and shot tracking are all on the phone. The Watch handles distances, changing holes, and playing your Skills audio.

Can I record on my Watch?
Yes, audio notes. Open a Skill, tap Audios, and tap the + button. It saves to that Skill's Audios tab and syncs to your iPhone. My Voice and My Coach cues, the ones that play before a shot, are recorded on the phone.

Do I need my phone with me on the course?
You need it to start the round. After that, if Play is open on your Watch, distances run from your wrist and you can leave the phone in your bag. Bear in mind scoring and shot tracking still need the phone, so most people carry it anyway.

My Watch distances look wrong.Check the hole number at the bottom of the Watch screen. If it does not match the hole you are on, use the arrows to change it. Distances are always measured to the hole currently selected.

Which Apple Watch do I need?
Any Watch running watchOS 11.6 or later, paired to an iPhone with PreSwing installed. The Watch app cannot be installed on its own.

Should I end my round on the Watch or the phone?
End it on your iPhone. Tap the back arrow on the hole screen, then Complete Round. That is what saves the round to your history.
